Come back to me

There are some pieces of music which seem to tumble out of nowhere, through the writer and into the realm of what we know as everyday life.

It was January 2024, dark and dim January.

A new year can bring complicated emotions to the surface and despite being someone who loves a good party on new year’s eve, the prospect of another year also marks the passing of time.

We lost my Nanny at the end of 2023 and suddenly a whole lifetime became the past, despite her world and the people she loved still moving with the present.

Come back to me is simple but beautiful and sort of broke my heart that day when it landed on the piano; a delicate call and ghostly echo, unrelenting through beauty, pain, despair and resignation.

This piano piece has no lyrics and is purely instrumental, but that recurring phrase is played as though it were sung. Like many have said, music has a power to speak where words fail and I certainly find this to be true.

Come back to me is not all about sadness. It’s the acknowledgment of the most beautiful things in our lives and a longing to bring them closer.

I hope this music speaks to you in the same way it did to me.
